The Mineral Processing Engineering major is a characteristic major of the Ministry of Education and Beijing, was selected into school’s “211 Project”, “985 Advantage Discipline Innovation Platform”, a new energy technology “111 Talent Introduction Plan”, and a national “Double First Class” construction discipline. It has been evaluated as an A+ discipline by the Ministry of Education and has been certified as a national key discipline in engineering education. The Department of Mineral Processing Engineering can be traced back to the “Mineral Processing Teaching and Research Office” in the 1950s. During the “Sixth Five Year Plan” to “Fifteen Year Plan” period, under the leadership of professors such as Wang Zune, Zhang Rongzeng, Guo Mengxiong, and Feng Shaoguan, the “Mineral Processing Teaching and Research Office” has undertaken more than 100 scientific research projects, won 7 national and provincial awards, and published more than 10 monographs, making great contributions to talent cultivation and technological progress in China’s coal washing and processing industry. From the 11th Five Year Plan to the end of the 12th Five Year Plan, the “Mineral Processing Engineering Department” was renamed as the “Mineral Processing Engineering Department”. It has undertaken research work on a number of vertical and horizontal topics such as national scientific and technological support, “863”, and “973”, with a total research funding of over 65 million yuan. It has received 14 national and provincial awards, published 21 monographs and textbooks, and authorized 86 patents.
The Department of Mineral Processing Engineering has platforms and teams such as the Engineering Research Center for Coal-based Slurry Fuel of the Ministry of Education, the Mineral Processing Professional Laboratory, the National Engineering Laboratory for Efficient Utilization of Indium Tin Resources (Beijing), the Engineering Technology Innovation Center for High Purity Quartz Resource Development and Utilization of the Ministry of Natural Resources, the Engineering Technology Research Center for Comprehensive Utilization of Three Rare Resources in the Nonferrous Metals Industry, the Key Laboratory for Separation and Processing of Co-occurring Resources in the Nonferrous Metals Industry, the Coal Processing Pilot System, the Changjiang Scholar Team of the Ministry of Education, the Excellent Youth Team (Cultivated) of the Central University of the Ministry of Education for Clean and Efficient Utilization of New Generation Coal Technology, and the Innovative Team for Efficient Utilization of Strategic Key Metal Mineral Resources in the Nonferrous Metals Industry. The department specializes in coal washing and processing, coal water slurry preparation technology, non-metallic mineral material processing, metal mineral selection, and the research field of solid waste resource utilization technology and equipment has formed a distinctive research direction in the mining industry, and multiple research results are at a leading level both domestically and internationally. The preparation technology of coal water slurry has been industrialized, and significant progress has been made in the research of fine coal water slurry preparation and combustion technology, lignite upgrading and processing technology. The interference bed separation technology of coarse coal slurry has been industrialized and promoted. The deep ash reduction and desulfurization process and equipment of coal have been promoted nationwide. The technology and products of coal briquette have entered the international market, and the technology and equipment of mineral and solid waste crushing, separation, screening, and dehydration are at the leading level both domestically and internationally. The first set of pulsating centrifugation and other beneficiation equipment has been developed and applied, and a batch of difficult to treat coal, non-ferrous metals, black metals, rare minerals, and co-associated resources recovery and utilization technology has achieved breakthroughs and engineering promotion and application, creating significant economic and social benefits.
This major adheres to the talent cultivation model of “broad foundation, strong practice, and large-scale engineering”, highlighting the cross integration of specialties, and emphasizing the forefront and comprehensiveness of knowledge. Implement a full process mentorship system for undergraduate students, providing in-depth guidance and personalized training on their humanistic literacy, scientific literacy, innovation and entrepreneurship, career planning, and other aspects.

In addition, this major has established 23 practical teaching bases with large enterprises such as National Energy Group, Kailuan Mining Group, Lu’an Mining Group, Jizhong Energy Group, Huaibei Mining Group, Shenhua Group, etc. It regularly invites technical personnel from enterprise units and design units to participate in academic activities, discipline construction, and talent cultivation.
